Corrugated Roads
by Ginny Lowndes

Corrugated Roads presents a wild child’s journey through the flip side of Menzies’ Australia. Her odyssean experiences and matter-of-fact commentary provide a humorous but often heartbreaking foreground for the backdrop of comic, tragic and just plain bizarre events and people of a drought-beset 1950s town in Queensland’s Outback.

A mother desperately seeking civility, a shearer father struggling to make a quid, an extended and highly dysfunctional family, Sisters of Mercy who have none, are all combatants the child must square up to and ultimately escape from.

“ A gritty telling and a book that I couldn't put down. And, in spite of its serious subject matter, there is relief in the unexpected humour that arises out of the girl's imaginative misconceptions about events beyond her experience.”
Geoffrey Dean
Over 20 years ago, writer Alan Marshall read some of the short stories by then television scriptwriter Ginny Lowndes and wrote:
“ Her wealth of experience would be the envy of any writer wanting to write an epic about the life of an Australian girl … Ginny is a long way ahead of her time. Her stories are amazingly varied … but tying them all together is a natural understanding of human character and a keen eye to record the significant … These are extremely modern and frank stories.”
Alan Marshall
